Most strategies dazzle in theory but stumble in practice. They promise transformative change, backed by glossy presentations and well-crafted soundbites. Yet, as Harvard Business Review points out, that three out of every five employees rate their organisation weak on strategy execution.

Here’s the unspoken truth: strategy isn’t enough. Success hinges on creating the right conditions for execution—a process that’s dynamic, nuanced, and far from predictable. If your approach relies on outdated methods or assumptions that teams will simply “figure it out,” Sorry to burst the bubble!

The Hard Truths Behind Execution

1. Cross-Functional Silos Are Suffocating Your Strategy  You know those silos we often ignoring? They’re can be the kryptonite for executing a successful strategy. Without a cross-functional ecosystem, your teams are operating in isolation, and your brilliant plan is crumbling in real time.

  • Rather than treat collaboration as a ‘nice to have’— treat it as a necessity.

  • Break the walls between teams and get them working together properly.

  • Appoint cross-functional leaders who can bridge the gaps and keep things on track.  (McKinsey

2. Communication Is More Fragile Than You Think Miscommunication isn’t just an oversight—it’s a silent saboteur. A strategy can’t thrive if half the organisation doesn’t know what it is or how they fit into it.

  • Precision is power. Define every term and expectation with clarity.

  • Take into account local language and vernacular, as misinterpretations may trip you up.

  • Create open, continuous feedback loops that keep everyone aligned.

3. Misaligned Goals: A Recipe for Chaos. If your teams are pulling in different directions, your strategy doesn’t stand a chance. Shared goals are the anchor of effective execution.

  • Establish clear, unified objectives that bring cohesion.

  • Demonstrate how each role contributes to the broader mission, igniting a shared sense of purpose.

4. The Reality Check: Your Plan Will Be Tested. No strategy survives its first brush with reality unchanged. The best organisations embrace this uncertainty, using it to sharpen their approach.

  • Build agility into your strategy from day one.

  • Empower teams to adapt quickly without waiting for endless approvals. Agility outpaces bureaucracy every time.

5. Fear of Testing Is Your Weakest Link A strategy untested is a strategy untrusted. Pilots and trials are your safety net, allowing you to refine and strengthen before scaling.

  • Test deliberately and adjust relentlessly.

  • Use real-world insights to evolve—not just validate—your strategy.

6. Ownership Rather Than Accountability. People excel when they feel personally connected to their work. Execution thrives in environments where ownership is cultivated, not just assigned.

  • Foster a culture where teams take pride in their contributions.

  • Empower and communicate what how each person's role drives the strategy forward.

7. Measure What Matters—Not What’s Convenient Metrics should illuminate, not obscure. Chasing vanity metrics only leads to misguided decisions.

  • Focus on KPIs that reveal true progress and impact.

  • Regularly refine what you measure to ensure it aligns with evolving objectives. (Bain

The Take Away

Execution is where strategies either soar or stumble. It’s not about following a rigid plan—it’s about cultivating an environment where teams collaborate, adapt, and innovate. The strategies that succeed are those backed by a commitment to clarity, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Remember, strategy sets the vision, but execution determines the outcome.
